Tips to Combat the Winter Blues

Everything you need to know about antiviral alternatives

There are a number of essential oils which have antiviral properties and can help to soothe some of the symptoms associated with viruses. These are perfect for if you’re looking for alternative ways to combat colds and flu, or simply want to try something in addition to conventional medicine. Here, we look at some of the most effective antiviral essential oils and how they can help you.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils are derived from plants and are complex mixtures of phytochemicals. They act synergistically on multiple stages of viral replication to disrupt viruses. They also act synergistically with most medications.

Research shows that many essential oils have antiviral, antibacterial properties and do have an impact on flu viruses as well as corona viruses. Essential oils are useful for both the prevention and treatment of viruses.

Lemongrass is a versatile oil, with antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown Lemongrass essential oil to be effective against a variety of well-known pathogens.

Rosemary is an energising oil and a potent antioxidant. Rosemary is known to have powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

Eucalyptus oil has a menthol aroma which clears sinuses, eases congestion and reduces coughing and sneezing, which will certainly make you feel better if you’re suffering from a cold, the flu or siniustis.

Peppermint is known for being soothing, especially when it comes to cough sweets and medicine - and its menthol properties make it a fantastic decongestant. Peppermint can also reduce fever, and might even help you to feel a little more positive and less fatigued over time.

How to use these essential oils

There are a number of ways that you can use essential oils to help to combat a virus. Firstly, you might like to simply drop some of the oil into a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam.

Alternatively, you can dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut and add it to a warm bath.
Air diffuses can also be used with many essential oils, and these can help to cleanse the air while making you feel better.
